Ice and water shield

Ice and water shield is a self-adhering rubberised membrane applied at the roof's most vulnerable points — eaves, valleys, and around penetrations — where ordinary underlayment is not enough. It seals around fixings rather than just lying under them, so water that gets past the covering still cannot reach the decking. It matters most where meltwater backs up behind ice at a cold eave, and in valleys where water volume is highest.

What the job involves

  • Membrane at eaves extending past the interior wall line
  • Full-width application in valleys
  • Sealing around penetrations, skylights and chimney bases
  • Correct overlap and roller-bonding to the decking
  • Coordination with drip edge and underlayment layering

Signs you need it

  • A history of ice damming at the eaves
  • Repeated valley leaks despite repair
  • Any re-covering on a roof with low-slope sections

Questions

Is this needed in Georgia?

At the eaves it matters most in the north of the state, where freeze-thaw and ice damming are real. In valleys and around penetrations it is worth having anywhere, because that is about water volume rather than ice.

Can it be added to an existing roof?

Only where the covering comes off, since it bonds directly to the decking. It is a re-cover or major-repair item rather than a retrofit.

Describe what you are seeing

South Georgia roofs take long-duration wind from tropical systems and then sit in heat and humidity the rest of the year. Water that gets in does not dry out on its own.
